Tools of the Trade

'Tools of the Trade' Painting

Accumulated over a lifetime, these tools were set out in a way that seemed to reveal something of the identity and qualities of the artist/sculptor. The rich mix of colours, shapes and textures set up a visual counterpoint with the obscured silhouettes painted on the wall behind indicating the original location of each tool, an intended order that had, over the years, been abandoned.

My obsessive sense of order would not have allowed me such an array in my own studio, yet the stimulating impact of this complex juxtaposition coupled with my love of tools inspired me to explore my responses in more depth through detail representation of the subject.

Following on from ‘Tools of the Trade’ I developed a body of work focusing on individual tools.
