Residency

The Portsmouth Grammar School

2013, I was artist in residence for three-months at The Portsmouth Grammar School, which involved producing a body of work for exhibition and working closely with the students. This project linked the school with Portsmouth Historic Dockyard whereby the students studied and explored the tools of shipbuilding, alongside the retired Dockyard ‘apprentices’, a community of volunteers who maintain and look after the permanent Apprentice Exhibition and archive.

A small book documenting the project can be viewed and purchased here:

"When I first met Artist-in-Residence, Julie Graves, I was instantly drawn to her wonderful sense of curiosity and her inherent ability to identify the extraordinary in the ordinary. When Julie suggested that we base the Residency Project on the Apprentice Museum in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, I could have never imagined how inventive and creative the Year 9 pupils’ responses would be."
