Underground-Overground

My continued engagement with textiles attempts to concentrate on understanding the working lives of their makers whether textiles are made in factories or domestic situation, for the purpose of earning a living or for the sheer pleasure of it. Whether with help of simple tools or with the use of the latest technology, the human factor involved cannot be ignored. It is often the invisible and silent makers of textiles whom I attempt to make visible in my work.

'Underground-Overground' started out as a mission/obsession to find out where a small soft toy that was given away with a McDonalds happy meal had come from, where it had been made, how and by whom. Out of my initial research, tracing and mapping I produced a woven, printed and stitched piece that embodied a snapshot of my findings.
